Also, I think it should only work on Elites...
Once, I "accidentally" captured a standard skill. Yuck

Agreed. Same thing happened to me. In the heat of the battle, it's very easy to miss what skill you're capturing.

ive yet to have a problem with zeroing in on elite skills, its really not hard to push the hotkey right after(or while) the boss is using the skill, at least not for me...i dont know if lagg issues are involved here or what...just my point of view

Obviously you have not played a Warrior or Ranger. These 2 professions use stances and these are not displayed when the Boss is using it. And you're right, lag also plays a part. It takes a while for it to register after clicking on Signet of Capture, and by the time it registers, you may have clicked again and it gets cancelled.

I captured a normal my very 1st try using the sig. My next effort was better. I got elemental attunement! Unfortunately, we very shortly afterwards ran into the ettin boss with Healing Hands, which I also had wanted.

Theyre not showing on bosses because those skills you want to capture have instantaneous, or near instantaneous casting times. The only way to capture skills like that is to keep casting signet of capture, until it starts capturing what you want. You have to be quick enough to cancel it, cause you will often capture usless skills every 10 seconds or so. Hit or miss.
I think it is unfair.

Bah, it should be able to get non-elite skills. Afterall, the siginet is cheaper than buying the skill outright, and if you can't find the quest that gives a skill you can still capture it.

It should ignore all skills you already have and zoom in on the last skill used by the boss that you do not have. If I'm not mistaken, it will always try to capture the last skill used by the boss even if you already have it. And if you do, it says...you already possess the skill or something like that...This makes capturing of new skills a pain.
The capturing of a skill using Signet of Capture should only be cancelled if I press the Esc key. Currently, it gets cancelled if I press Signet of Capture again. So spamming Signet of Capture can result in not capturing the skill, even though spamming is necessary for stances.

If elites were easy to get they wouldnt be elites though, I understand about the stances and what not and they require great timing, thast why many people form elite skillhunting teams..the idea is when you get to the boss you dont kill it till everyone has captured the skills they want(unless you capture a different one by mistake) Play it smart guys make sure no one beats on the mob...if your on a skill hunting team you should have monks to keep you alive while waiting for the skill to be used...on top of that there is a small period of time after the skill has been used (very small...maybe a second not much more) that you can still capture the signet...there have been many times for me that when the skill comes up and i click on capture they havent actually started casting/using the skill yet ..maybe its not that the mobs are using skill to fast to capture...maybe you are trying slightly to early...I have captured elites after the skill pic dissapearred from under mobs name (though none were stances i admit)

There is no way to know when a boss uses a stance so I'm not sure what you mean about great timing. The only way to capture it now is to spam signet of capture and hope it catches it.
An elite skill-hunting team isn't easy to find. Most ppl quit after they got the skills they want. This is why they need to upgrade the henchies so they can fill in the gap. The AI for the warrior henchies is particularly poor since they always charge to the enemy and end up aggravating another group of enemies.
Also before the recent upgrade, the henchies were getting eaten alive by spectral agony. Now with 3 pieces of armor infused, hopefully they aren't so fragile.

I'd rather buy it...than lose the chance to capture an elite. Afterall it doesn't cost much more buying it than capturing it.

Not to mention there is still a cool-down period when you cancel the capture before you can recast signet of capture...and by then your henchies would have killed the boss since they are too stupid to disengage even if you run away.

But that's just it, you don't loose the chance. You can have more than 1 SoC purchased at a time and I believe (and I'm certain will be corrected if I'm wrong) you can have multiple SoC's in your skill bar at a time

Yes you can, I had 2 SoC in my skill bar when I went on a skill capture run in the Dragon Glint mission.

I had 7 in my skill bar when i took on my mirror image..and symbol of wrath.
I think the SoC system is fine. I have gladly purchased them and was happy to get a standard skill or an elite. A skill is a skill and we can always return to try again for the skills we miss.

Not many characters can afford to give up more than one slot for SOC. Most characters would not be very effective with more than 1 slot taken up by SOC, unless of course your team mates help you out.

lol, did you really have to resort to that to beat your mirror? I beat my mirror with all my regular skills intact.
So I'm curious, have you completed capturing all your elites?

When you have tons of gold, learning a skill is preferable to wasting time capturing normal skills using signet of capture. You have much to learn, my young padawan...^^
